R.I.P. - Mr. Wizard

I don't know about you, but I've had a lot of lousy science teachers in my life.  Mostly boring, but some of them were bitter and womanizing.  There was one I really liked though, and his name was Mr. Wizard:

His real name was Don Herbert -- he was a TV scientist from the fifties to the early nineties, and he died yesterday at the age of 89.

Mr. Wizard was kind of like the Mr. Rogers of kids science shows (as opposed to the more Sesame Street-y style of Bill Nye, The Science Guy), so going back and watching old episodes will feel like time itself has somehow slowed down to a crawl.  In the 80's, however, Mr. Wizard was engaging and taught me how to think about science -- not just memorize the periodic table, which I was never able to do (God damn it).

People like Steve Irwin and Mr. Wizard are celebrities, but they're quiet ones.  They do what they do very well, and we miss them the most when they're gone.  So goodbye, Mr. Wizard!  You taught my generation well, and we won't forget it.

And hopefully, the laws of science are the same in heaven, or else he'll be totally f***ed.  RIP.
