In Your Ears: Simon Dawes

If you're into sixties Brit-pop inspired acts, you should check out Simon Dawes' first full length.  Lead singer Taylor Goldsmith's vocals range from a somber tone to a yelping plea, depending on how he feels about the girl he's singing about.  The lyrics, for the most part, are soaked in what sounds like a teenaged mentality (not that this is a bad thing).  "Be There Right Now," has Goldsmith singing, "She thinks she's sleeping over, well be my guest, because you won't be waking with me.  'Cause I never stay with sure things."  Harsh, dude.  She just wants to give you a little.  "Salute the Institution" also sounds like it's coming straight from the mouth of an angered youth, discouraged by what he sees as a Stepford-style existence (they are from Malibu after all).  Guitarist Blake Mills provides some impressive George Harrison-esque guitar licks throughout the album, especially on "Maybe Not Today."  While not all the tunes on the album are necessarily as catchy as "The Awful Things," most stand up to multiple listens.  The only exception being "Got a Light," which sounds way too similar to Radiohead's "My Iron Lung," off The Bends.  Seriously, it's so close it's distracting.  You can tell these guys aren't taking themselves too seriously, but are genuinely having a good time making music.  It's nothing deep, but it's a decent listen.
